Why i like A.R.Rahman
A.R.Rahman it is. his music is so pitch perfect with world class sound engineering and an output which is on par with Global standards. We do not come across many goods or services that are made in India and yet of highest quality that westerners enjoy. Rahman’s music was one such product which came as a gift to Indians stoking the expectations of a glorious Indian past which towered over the world…
He is so Indian and Tamil at heart yet his process in music making was global using all latest equipment and techniques. When other composers were trying to make Pizzas with Indian logistics, Rahman made awesome Idlis with global logistics and processes. picture this : before Rahman’s advent, all the recording used to happen manually with all those musicians and singers singing and playing at one go and sound was recorded. With Rahman, he used to record various musicians’ and singer’s tracks separately and mixed the best version to acquire the final product….
Its not all about his recording methods but his philosophy of music as a whole - a rhythm driven musical experience in sync with common man’s rhythm. His music is grammatically simple yet clear with its vision of sound. Suddenly, the trumpets sounded like trumpet, nadhaswarams sounded like Nadhaswawarms and so on. He removed all the clutter in sounds left over by his predecessors and rechristened them with simpler arrangements on a digital mat and let enough space for the treble and bass to echo across.
He satisfied the unquenchable thirst of the Indian youth of 90s for a well produced music with a world its own. Young people could connect to Rahman’s music and they were in turn connected to a world of music. He satisfied the expectations of a ambitious generation which was striving for excellence in all fields.
Music composing is no longer about creating counterpoints, incorporating fugue or other high level western classic music terminologies, it was more about sounding clear and dear. Random ephemeral sounds were not the answer too. It took someone who understood the science of sound and art of music to give the perfect shape to the sound which quenches the thirst for sounds. When you listen to his songs, one will feel as if he had a vision of sound that each instrument was going to make and that he sculpted their sounds to make a song.
Neither his awards nor his humility or other pleasant characteristics make him the legend and crowd favorite as his music does. His music is not the life saver or the ones which you hear in your townbuses or pubs, bars. its an art like your prized painting on your wall which has its own place in your life. Even after 25 years of his arrival, his songs sound the most unique to other composers though the gap is clearly closing
